What is TMJ Section

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) describes a group of conditions affecting the muscles in your jaw. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the main cause of pain in these cases. These joints connect the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull. Located on each side of your head, the TMJs work together so you can do simple, everyday things like chewing your food, speaking to a friend or swallowing your favorite drink.

TMJ disorders cause tenderness in the jaw, facial pain and difficulty moving the joint. You may also notice a clicking, grating, and/or popping noise when you move your jaw. Others may experience lockjaw or difficulty opening their mouth all the way.

While there is no known cause, TMJ affects millions of Americans with trauma to the jaw or face usually playing a pivotal role in the development of this condition.

DID YOU KNOW?

Anxiety and stress are two significant factors that contribute to many cases of TMD. If you’re a healthy individual and have suddenly begun to experience jaw pain, take an inward look at what’s been happening in your life lately. If you’ve been feeling extremely stressed or anxious, you could be experiencing temporomandibular joint pain. Teeth clenching and bruxism often accompany this cause of TMJ pain as many people subconsciously grit and grind their teeth when feeling upset, overwhelmed, or frustrated.

However, there are a few other conditions believed to contribute to the development of TMD as well, including:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Bruxism
  • Clenching

Frequently Asked Questions

Sleep apnea is most commonly caused by the airway repeatedly narrowing or closing during sleep. Factors such as excess weight, jaw or airway anatomy, enlarged tonsils, age, alcohol use, and nasal blockage can increase risk.

Untreated sleep apnea can raise the risk of serious health problems, including heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and dangerous daytime sleepiness. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help reduce these risks.

Warning signs include loud snoring, pauses in breathing, gasping during sleep, morning headaches, dry mouth, and daytime fatigue. A professional sleep evaluation or sleep study is needed to confirm a diagnosis.

Mild TMJ/TMD pain may improve with soft foods, avoiding gum and jaw clenching, and using warm or cold compresses. Ongoing pain, locking, or difficulty opening your mouth should be evaluated by a qualified provider.

There is no guaranteed instant cure for snoring, but sleeping on your side, avoiding alcohol before bed, and addressing nasal congestion may help. Persistent loud snoring should be evaluated, as it may be a sign of sleep apnea.

Snoring happens when airflow is partially blocked during sleep, causing throat tissues to vibrate. Common causes include nasal congestion, relaxed airway muscles, sleeping position, excess weight, alcohol use, and airway anatomy.

TMD symptoms may include jaw pain, facial soreness, painful clicking or popping, jaw stiffness, headaches, difficulty chewing, or jaw locking. Persistent or worsening symptoms should be assessed by a dentist or healthcare provider.
