What is TMJ Section

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) describes a group of conditions affecting the muscles in your jaw. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the main cause of pain in these cases. These joints connect the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull. Located on each side of your head, the TMJs work together so you can do simple, everyday things like chewing your food, speaking to a friend or swallowing your favorite drink.

TMJ disorders cause tenderness in the jaw, facial pain and difficulty moving the joint. You may also notice a clicking, grating, and/or popping noise when you move your jaw. Others may experience lockjaw or difficulty opening their mouth all the way.

While there is no known cause, TMJ affects millions of Americans with trauma to the jaw or face usually playing a pivotal role in the development of this condition.

DID YOU KNOW?

Anxiety and stress are two significant factors that contribute to many cases of TMD. If you’re a healthy individual and have suddenly begun to experience jaw pain, take an inward look at what’s been happening in your life lately. If you’ve been feeling extremely stressed or anxious, you could be experiencing temporomandibular joint pain. Teeth clenching and bruxism often accompany this cause of TMJ pain as many people subconsciously grit and grind their teeth when feeling upset, overwhelmed, or frustrated.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD)

However, there are a few other conditions believed to contribute to the development of TMD as well, including:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Bruxism
  • Clenching

Here at Novi Sleep & TMJ, we are committed to helping people treat this condition. If you think you or a loved one is suffering from TMD, please reach out to our office to schedule an appointment. We can provide non-invasive solutions for pain relief. By wearing a special mouthguard-like oral appliance, many people are able to reduce or eliminate their pain.

Life changer! I was diagnosed with borderline sleep apnea and due to family heart issues I decided to treat my sleep Apnea. I had heard horror stories of the CPAP machine and with my travel schedule I wanted a less bulky solution. My dentist referred me to Dr Ely and she and her team have been fabulous. First off the appliance fitting process was effortless. I have a very small mouth and tight jaw joints so some procedures are difficult. They made it as painless as possible. After a couple months we had everything dialed in. I had my second sleep study and my sleep apnea score was much lower. I can saw it is because the sleep appliance is so easy to wear and sometimes I forget I am wearing it! I also wake up in the middle of the night if I forgot to put it in. Her team has also been helpful when I had issues. I had a nasty cold and sneezed violently in the middle of the night. The TMJ that I have been told I had since I was 12 came out like flying colors! My jaw was locked and very painful. I called Dr Ely and she prescribed medication and gave me some home exercises. A couple months later I was back to normal! I can honestly saw this appliance has changed my life. I am no longer tired and groggy. I have so much energy and best of all I sleep through the night. If you are a candidate for a sleep apnea appliance calll Dr Ely!

Dr. Anjoo Ely is my TMJ angel! The relief I’ve gotten from my splints in just one month are unbelievable and have made me almost pain free! I have already recommended her to a co-worker who has TMJ issues as well. Her splints are very reasonably priced as compared to others. Her bedside manner is fantastic well and is so funny. Thank doctor Ely, you’re the best!

Following a sleep study, I'm very glad to have been recommended this place as the oral appliance they suggested has been doing wonders so far. Snoring has gone down significantly too which has been helping my wife 😅 The difference between with and without using this appliance is pretty significant to make me realize that this was an important decision and wise choice! Thanks to Dr. Ely and her team!

I was fitted for a mouth appliance to replace my cpap and couldn’t be happier with the results! I used a cpap for years and always disliked it, especially when traveling. The new appliance works the same without the discomfort and size of the cpap. Dr Ely and her staff are very careful and conscientious about every detail - highly recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sleep apnea is most commonly caused by the airway repeatedly narrowing or closing during sleep. Factors such as excess weight, jaw or airway anatomy, enlarged tonsils, age, alcohol use, and nasal blockage can increase risk.

Untreated sleep apnea can raise the risk of serious health problems, including heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and dangerous daytime sleepiness. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help reduce these risks.

Warning signs include loud snoring, pauses in breathing, gasping during sleep, morning headaches, dry mouth, and daytime fatigue. A professional sleep evaluation or sleep study is needed to confirm a diagnosis.

Mild TMJ/TMD pain may improve with soft foods, avoiding gum and jaw clenching, and using warm or cold compresses. Ongoing pain, locking, or difficulty opening your mouth should be evaluated by a qualified provider.

There is no guaranteed instant cure for snoring, but sleeping on your side, avoiding alcohol before bed, and addressing nasal congestion may help. Persistent loud snoring should be evaluated, as it may be a sign of sleep apnea.

Snoring happens when airflow is partially blocked during sleep, causing throat tissues to vibrate. Common causes include nasal congestion, relaxed airway muscles, sleeping position, excess weight, alcohol use, and airway anatomy.

TMD symptoms may include jaw pain, facial soreness, painful clicking or popping, jaw stiffness, headaches, difficulty chewing, or jaw locking. Persistent or worsening symptoms should be assessed by a dentist or healthcare provider.
